Tax & VAT

Collect tax with inclusive or exclusive pricing.

Tax is nobody's idea of a fun afternoon, so this stays short.

Setting up tax

  1. Go to Settings → Tax & VAT
  2. Turn on Enable tax collection
  3. Enter your tax rate (e.g. 20 for 20%)
  4. Set the Tax label, the text customers see (e.g. VAT, GST, Sales Tax)
  5. Toggle Tax-inclusive pricing on or off (see below)
  6. Click Save

Pricing modes

  • Tax-inclusive (common in the UK and EU): prices already include tax. A $10 product shows as "$10.00 inc. VAT" and the customer pays $10. The tax portion is worked out backwards from the total.
  • Tax-exclusive (common in the US and Canada): tax is added on top at checkout. A $10 product shows as "$10.00 +Tax" and the customer pays $12 at a 20% rate.

Additional options

  • VAT number, enter your VAT/tax registration number to display it on orders
  • Tax on shipping, choose whether shipping costs are taxable

Tax is stored per-order: Each order records the tax rate and mode at the time of purchase, so your records stay accurate even if you change your settings later.
